The Centre of Science and Technology Policy was set up in 1991 to carry out studies on the dymanics of Science and Technology and their impact on economy and society, with the aim of supporting policy making, both in the public and private sector in the field of research and innovation. Its main areas of activity are: technology foresight, technology assessment, S&T planning, technology management.
CeS&T works in closely with firms, public institutions, university and research centres both in Italy and abroad, mainly in Europe. CeS&T is a member of ETAN (European Technology Assessment Network), an international network which includes the main European research centres that are active in the Technology Assessment field.
It is also a member of ESTO (European Science and Technology Observatory), a network of the main European research centres in the field of foresight and future studies. CeS&T’s cooperation with IPTS (Institute of Prospective Technological Studies) within the Joint Research Centre and many of the European Commission’s DGs is very intense and on-going.
CeS&T’s main clients in Italy’s public sector are: the Ministry of Education, University and Research, Ministery of Innovation and Technologies, Ministry of Production Activities, CNR-National Research Council, ENEA-National Agency for New Technologies, Energy and Environment, INFN-National Institute of Nuclear Physics, Regional Governments of Lombardia, Piemonte, Campania; in Italy’s private sector: the most important industrial firms (e.g. ENI, Pirelli, Finmeccanica) and service firms (e.g. Telecom Italia, ENEL, Autostrade, RAI, Mediaset, Compagnia di San Paolo).
One of CeS&T’s most important “products” is the Report on the “Critical Technologies for Italian Industry”, which, through a foresight exercise, identifies and evaluates the emerging technology that in the medium-long term can play a crucial role in the development of industry in Italy. The 2nd issue of this Report has just been completed; its results were used by the Ministry of Education, University, Research to prepare the National Research Plan 2004-2007.
