IEM - Institute for Media Economics
The Rosselli Foundation Institute for Media Economics (IEM) was set up in 1991 with the aim of studying the communications and media system and acting as a reference point for research into the associated technical, economic, institutional and social issues. Over the years, the Institute has become an important scientific benchmark for institutions, operators and experts, providing the tools required when analysing, interpreting and forecasting the development of the communication system on an international scale.
The Institute carries out qualitative and quantitative research, strategic consultancy projects, monitoring activities, observatories, studies and publications. Its main fields of enquiry include: the perimeter and dimensions of the media market; the impact of the media and communications industry on the social and economic fabric of the country: from production to training, from culture to the guarantee of pluralism; technological development and the processes of technological and economic convergence and the evolution of languages; business strategies of media groups; the concept of public service and its reshaping in a new digital habitat; legislation and regulations on the new products and services. All the phenomena are interpreted, analysed and forecast on a global scale with specific reference to the current situation and the comparison of future expectations in the main industrialised countries.
Non-proprietary research results are then disclosed through a series of technical reports and discussed at conferences and seminars. In particular, the Institute regularly produces a Report on the communications industry in Italy, which is the only example of systemic, quantitative and qualitative analysis published annually in Italy on this subject. The Report examines the importance of individual markets (from TV to press and tlc), analysing their resources and users, as well as the most significant trends in sectors and across the board, paying special attention to the theme of innovation and Italian competitiveness.
The Institute for Media Economics collaborates with similar bodies in the main industrialised countries. This allows it to retain a clear and up-to-date view of the evolution of the main national components of the global media and communications industry.
When carrying out its multiple activities, the Institute collaborates with a selected group of experts (researchers, university lecturers), under the supervision and coordination of a scientific committee, whose multidisciplinary composition reflects the integrated approach to research developed by the Institute.
