In 1997 in Milan the Rosselli Foundation set up the Laboratory of Cognitive, Methodological Socio- Economic Sciences (LaSCoMES) thanks to the experience gained through the activities of the laboratory of Economics and Cognitive Science. This was done in co-operation with the Department of Business Administration and the Department of Economics of “L. Bocconi” Business University, the Departments of Sociology and Economics and the Institute of Psychology of Milan State University and, afterwards, with the Department of Psychology of Milano Bicocca University.
LaSCo has carried on the research in the field of cognitive sciences, with particular attention given to the different applications of cognitive psychology and artificial intelligence within both human and social sciences as well as in economics.
LaSCo is an interdisciplinary research laboratory whose aim is to improve the models of economics and social sciences thanks to the contribution of epistemology and cognitive sciences. It aims to deepen, both experimentally and theoretically, the cognitive basis of economics and social sciences and to develop their use to explain and predict economic and social events.
The main research topics, examined within 5 Research Units, are related to the following areas:
• Psychology, Society and Health
(Risk Perception, Mental Representation of the Social Phenomena, forms of expressions of individual identity and collective aggregation, description forms of psychological and social inconvenience, analysis of the multicultural integration processes)
• Complexity and Simulations
(Agent Based Simulation, Recursivity Models, Models of Connection, Complex Adaptive Systems, System Dynamics)
• Epistemology, Ontology and Society
(Social Epistemology, Computational Ontology, Social and Legal Ontology, Ontology of actions and agents)
• Ethics, Society and Economics
(Ethical Code of the Scientist, Ethical Impact of New Technologies, Corporate Social Responsability, Relationship between Ethics of Science and Society, Finance and Ethics).
Cognition, Economics and Technology
(“Shaping” Psycho-social of Technologies, Psychology of the Confidence, Negotiable Behaviour, Cognitive Ergonomics, Scientific Communication and Public Understanding of Science and Technology).
Between 1998 and 2002 LaSCo coordinated the "Human Reasoning and Decision Making” network, the European project dedicated to cognitive science and promoted by the European Science Foundation, the main multinational scientific body in the European Union. The aim of the Network was to create a series of research programmes of common interest to economists, social and cognitive scientists, with the precise aim of increasing our understanding of the processes involved in decision-making.
Moreover, LaSco is concerned with academic biannual journal Mind & Society - Cognitive Studies in Economic and Social Sciences, whose main aim is to study the relationships between mental and social phenomena.
The journal intends to be a forum for all the academics on social and economic sciences, who believe in needs for capacities of an interdisciplinary cognitive approach.
