The book contains revised and updated versions of papers presented at the Sixth Workshop of the European Science Foundation Network entitled “Human Reasoning and Decision Making”. The workshop was entitled “Natural and Cultural Bases of Human Inference” and was held in Paris in June 2001.
The essays of the book focus on the articulation of the biological and cultural bases of human inference
Modern human cognition, and in particular inference, is made possible and shaped both by evolved capacities and by culturally developed skills and artifacts. This volume represents a much-needed articulation of these diverse bases of cognition. This articulation is approached from three complementary levels: adult performance, cognitive development, and cultural history and prehistory. Scholars from several disciplines contributed to this endeavor, including researchers in cognitive, developmental, social and evolutionary psychology, neuropsychology, cognitive anthropology, epistemology and philosophy of mind.
The collection is a state of the art debate between universalist and culturalist approaches to human cognitive abilities
